Qatar Economy – A five-year ICT plan unveiled

Qatar Economy – The Information Technology Five-Year Plan aims to double the share of GDP and labor force of about 40,000 QR11bn 2015. This is an ambitious plan of all connections to high speed broadband to about 95% of families and businesses of Qatar for the next four years.

The five-year plan was prepared by ictQATAR’s vision of creating a knowledge-based economy that drives the development and benefits for all.

In 2015, Qatar Economy will benefit from ICT solutions in key aspects of its economy. It will also be using the information, communication and technology to become more integrated into the global economy, ictQATAR said in its latest bulletin.

Another of the main objectives of the plan year ICT Qatar is to achieve mass adoption of ICT and Internet in all segments of society (90%). It also aims to reach a wide accessibility and effectiveness of online services in government primary.

“With the increase of investment projects on a large scale, public spending on the rise, and population growth is expected to average 2.1% per year over the next five years, the integration of ICT in the daily life of each, and Qatar economy, even more crucial, “said ictQATAR.

And to compete globally for investment, talent, jobs and economic influence, Qatar Economy has continued to promote the growth of the ICT sector as one of the main pillars of the economy and society, the Supreme Council of Information, Communications and Technology said.

To achieve these objectives, a comprehensive, strategic framework was developed by ictQATAR. It has five “strategic objectives” in areas improves connectivity, increasing capacity, promote economic development, increase public development, improve the delivery of public service and to promote social benefits.

These five areas for the Qatar Economy will become an advanced economy based on knowledge and are more in line with government national objectives as formulated in Qatar National Vision 2030, and specific programs in the National Strategy development of Qatar 2011-2016.

“Telecommunications infrastructure of Qatar has increased substantially, and the current of public and private investment to increase capacity is promising. But the transition to a knowledge economy requires a solid infrastructure and enabling ubiquitous high-speed broadband to all households and businesses.

Qatar Economy has already laid a solid foundation for future progress, the report said. Mobile penetration in the country amounts to 167%, one of the highest in the world. In general, the average is 76% and among developed countries, is 116%. In 2010, 89% of households have a computer and 85% of people had one. Broadband use jumped from 41% of households in 2008 to 70% in 2010.

Qatar Economy ranks in the top quartile of all countries surveyed in the Networked Readiness Index of the most recent World Economic Forum.

The ICT market in Qatar Economy is growing and should grow by double-digit compound annually!
